Grand Grill is not actually run by the Habtoor Grand, despite being located on its ground floor. This is probably for the best, because this South African steakhouse really is the standout restaurant in the hotel.
The interior is warm and inviting without conforming to the usual steakhouse stereotypes. Its an odd mixture of tile floors, African motifs on the walls and countless wine racks around the room (and even suspended from the ceiling). The overall effect though, is cozy and intimate.
Another surprise was the excellent service. Unusually for Dubai, the waiter knew the menu like the back of his hand, running us through the different cuts of meat and cooking options with hardly a pause for breath.
They offer a range of steaks, including American Black Angus, South African and Australian Margaret River, as well as a few South African specialities like Bobotie and Bunny Chow.
We chose the American Black Angus fillet, which arrived as 200 grams of deliciously marbled meat, pink in the middle and slightly charred on the outside. Sides of creamy spinach and sauteed mushrooms were just as good.
Service was excellent throughout. Our waiter even brought us warm bread and chicken liver pate as a complimentary snack while we waited for our steak.
Apart from an extensive wine list, Grand Grill also has a decent selection of beers. The Windhoeck from Namibia, and Castle Lager from South Africa are both worth a try. There’s a comfortable terrace for when its not too hot, and a private room for functions.
